For Circus Zambia, the magic of its craft goes beyond entertainment and tricks. Circus is a way to equip young people from underserved communities with life skills, and educational and employment opportunities. The social enterprise operates in Chibolya, a community in Lusaka, Zambia, where residents face systemic challenges such as limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, contributing to higher rates of school dropout, teen pregnancy, and HIV. The effects disproportionately affect young people, especially girls. Gender, religion, and nationality-based discrimination in education impact young people's mental health and ability to succeed in school. Circus Zambia works to change the status quo for young people in its community through what it knows best - circus.
About the project
Circus Zambia’s project uses a comprehensive strategy based on social circus to tackle discrimination in Chibolya schools from all angles. Circus Zambia has developed a social circus curriculum that focuses on the physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of participants to help them overcome their challenges. At the school leadership level, Circus Zambia co-creates and helps implement anti-discrimination policies. The project also trains teachers on how to effectively use social circus to raise awareness of the causes and effects of discrimination. And for students, Circus Zambia introduces them to the social circus curriculum so young people can take an active role in tackling discrimination and rewrite their educational journey.
