Introduction
DC SCORES trains coaches to create safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ young people.

Community details
What if sports were intentionally designed to be inclusive and welcoming for LGBTQIA+ young people? Sports can help improve physical and mental well-being, academic outcomes, and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a team helps kids build the resilience necessary to process the world around them.
However, many LGBTQIA+ young people do not reap the benefits of sports, with homophobia and feelings of exclusion leaving them sidelined. According to a 2017 Human Rights Campaign Foundation report, LBGTQIA+ young people are almost three times less likely to play on a sports team compared to all young people in the US, and 80% had not shared their LGBTQIA+ identity with their coaches.
Facing higher risks of homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health challenges, LGBTQIA+ young people need spaces where they feel safe and supported. That is why DC SCORES is taking action. Based in Washington, D.C., the organization works with students and coaches in low-income neighborhoods to change the status quo. By combining poetry, soccer, and service learning, DC SCORES creates environments where youth can lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.
About the project
DC SCORES’ “All on the Pitch” program equips coaches with the knowledge and skills to support and affirm LGBTQIA+ youth. By fostering a deeper understanding of LGBTQIA+ identities, terminology, and experiences, coaches will be better prepared to create inclusive spaces, address bias, and ensure safety and well-being for LGBTQIA+ students in the classroom and on the soccer field. The training aims to empower coaches as champions for LGBTQIA+ youth, reduce discrimination, and promote acceptance, helping all students thrive academically, emotionally, and physically.

United by Sport
DC SCORES’ holistic approach tackles homophobia and creates inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ young people. Through this impactful work, the project is helping participants feel welcomed in sports and is working to help change lives on and off the field.
