The communities of El Pueblo and Galapa in Atlántico, Colombia, are vibrant and culturally diverse, with a significant Afro-descendant population and an influx of Venezuelan refugees. These communities possess inherent strengths and potential, yet face pressing socioeconomic challenges that impact their ability to thrive. While their cultural richness offers a foundation for resilience, they experience limited access to essential services and opportunities, exacerbated by issues like poverty, discrimination, and gender-based violence. The need is for interventions that foster social cohesion, promote equality, and empower these communities to build upon their existing strengths and navigate the challenges they face.
About the project
Fútbol Con Corazón works in Atlántico district, specifically in El Pueblo and Galapa, to address community challenges through football. Its program “Goles de Afecto” uses the beautiful game to bring people together, build connections, and tackle discrimination. By engaging young people and families in life-skills education and values-based sports activities, the project fosters social cohesion while addressing discrimination based on gender, race, and nationality. Safe recreational spaces and targeted interventions address root causes of violence and substance dependency by fostering community support and inclusion. Trained coaches and local leaders ensure long-term sustainability, fostering understanding between migrants and host communities and empowering women and girls to drive lasting positive change.
