Introduction
The Healthy Girls Leadership Program ignites confidence and equips girls with essential life skills for a brighter future.

Community details
To combat Amsterdam’s housing shortage, IJburg, a neighborhood of artificial islands, was built on the IJmeer Lake in the Dutch capital's Oost borough. It is here, on Amsterdam’s artificial islands, where an organization is floating new ideas and creating real change. Girls Forward focusses on empowering girls 10-27 years in Amsterdam through various programs. For this Healthy Girls Leadership program, the focus will be on girls 14 and up living in IJburg. Many participants come from immigrant backgrounds, with the organization focusing on girls who are affected by religious, cultural, and gender-based barriers. These factors contribute to their limited sport participation and affect their overall well-being, leading to mental health challenges like loneliness and depression.
About the organization
Girls Forwards mission is to engage, educate and empower girls, because girls matter! Girls are talented, intelligent, and capable of realizing their goals, but societal pressures and barriers often prevent them from prioritizing their own growth. The Amsterdam-based organization aims to equip girls with the skills and tools they need to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams. Girls Forward addresses gender and cultural-based discrimination, boosts self-confidence, and promotes personal development. Through group activities, sport sessions, events, and individual coaching, girls connect, get inspired, and access support. Sport is not just utilized to create opportunities for physical movement, but to raise awareness of discrimination, support and empower girls affected by social barriers, and promote social cohesion.

United by Sport
Girls Forward’s holistic plan gets more girls into sport and addresses barriers at the root to enable them to continue playing and reap the long-term benefits of participating in sports. Its approach addresses gender and cultural-based obstacles to help ensure every girl can reach her full potential.
