Community details
Haiti has faced significant political unrest and natural disasters in its history, but in 2023, the beautiful game brought hope and joy to the Caribbean nation. It was the first time the Haiti women’s national football team qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. A player from the historic roster, defender Bethina Petit-Frere, began her journey at GOALS Haiti. The organization started in 2010 - the year a devastating and destructive earthquake hit the country. It uses football to equip young people with leadership skills and resilience to tackle discrimination and reach their full potential.
About the organization
GOALS Haiti empowers girls and boys in rural areas to drive positive social change in their communities. It does this through a holistic approach focusing on literacy, mental health, hygiene, social education, and self-confidence to create a community where everyone can thrive. Through football, the organization promotes gender equality, conflict resolution, and gender-based violence awareness and prevention. It develops young people as leaders on and off the pitch. Along with playing on a team, participants engage in community service projects such as planting trees and recycling initiatives and attend health lessons on topics like disease prevention, hygiene, and sex education. GOALS Haiti ensures girls and boys can access opportunities by helping them on their education path through literacy classes, tutoring lessons, and scholarships reaching children and youth who otherwise might be left behind.
