Community details

Lesotho, a small nation surrounded by South Africa, is nicknamed The Kingdom in the Sky. It’s the only country in the world entirely above 1,000 meters, but it also faces significant challenges. Lesotho has one of the highest rates of people living with HIV in the world and one of the highest rates of sexual and gender-based violence globally. Over 85% of women experience gender-based violence in their lifetime, according to the World Population Review 2022. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community also experience high rates of hate and discrimination. Kick4Life works with children and young people facing social and economic exclusion in Maseru, Lesotho’s capital, to create new pathways and possibilities through sport.

About the organization

Kick4Life is a multi-award-winning charity and social enterprise that uses the power of sport to address barriers young people experience and to empower participants to transform their lives and contribute to their communities. The organization works equally with girls and boys to tackle gender-based discrimination and violence, to promote gender equity, and to create safe spaces for participants to discuss challenges affecting them. Kick4Life also addresses hate, discrimination and violence experienced by members of the LGBTQIA+ by creating safe places to play and discuss sexual and gender identities. To tackle homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia collectively, Kick4Life brings community sports organizations that push for LGBTQIA+ rights together in Lesotho.

Kick4Life uses sport to address widespread and systemic discrimination affecting young people in Lesotho. The organization tackles gender-based discrimination, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia at the root, enabling participants to create a more inclusive future for themselves and their community.
