Introduction
Equality in the Andes: Leveraging Sports Against Intersectional Discrimination

Community details
The "Join the non-discrimination team" project in Acomayo, Cusco, Peru, addresses the multiple challenges faced by the Andean community, particularly girls from rural areas. Girls experience discrimination based on gender, age, and ethnicity, within a broader context of adult-centered, sexist, and racist cultural norms. The precarious economic situation of the community, with families living below the poverty line, exacerbates these problems. This is compounded by the fact that 86% of the student population are native Quechua speakers, who face internalized and systemic discrimination due to historical colonization. Limited access to sport, structural discrimination leading to gender-based violence, and pervasive racism, with a significant proportion of Cusco’s population acknowledging societal racism, directly contribute to the limited opportunities for girls, especially in fields such as science and sport.
About the project
The "Join the non-discrimination team" project focuses on countering discrimination against girls from rural areas based on gender, age, and ethnicity through sport and education. The project aims to educate children, families, teachers, and leaders in the education sector to prevent discrimination and acts of hate. Activities include the development of training programs, the strengthening of sports clubs, intergenerational dialogues and the improvement of sports infrastructure. The project aims to empower girls, promote equal participation in sport and foster a more inclusive community.

United by Sport
The project aims to create an environment where girls and boys are prepared to challenge discrimination, where families actively support actions to eliminate discrimination, and where educational institutions promote equal participation of all genders and ethnicities through sports disciplines. By addressing systemic discrimination and promoting social cohesion, the project ultimately aims to empower girls and boys to lead change, supported by their families and communities, in building a future free from violence and discrimination.
