Safe-Hub activities in Berlin Wedding
The district of Wedding in Berlin is one of the city’s most diverse areas but also one of the most socio-economically disadvantaged. Children and young people face severe structural barriers: 68% grow up in poverty, more than 65% of school entrants show language deficits, 21% of teenagers leave school without a diploma, and 17% of children start school overweight. These conditions limit access to extracurricular activities, safe recreational spaces, and opportunities for participation. Situated directly beside Leopoldplatz—a public space shaped by heavy use and frequent conflicts—Safe‑Hub provides a stabilizing, empowering environment within the neighborhood. By offering free, and culturally responsive sport and education programs, this program plays a vital role in strengthening agency, belonging, and social cohesion for children and young people in Wedding.
The Captains Committee is a youth‑leadership project that builds on Safe‑Hub Berlin’s free sport and education programs in Berlin‑Wedding. Captains are selected from the different programs and supported by coaches and youth mentors as they learn how to guide their teams, share ideas, and represent their peers. They take part in regular meetings, help organize youth‑led events like Fair Play tournaments, and contribute feedback that shapes activities across the Safe‑Hub.

Safe-Hub activities in Wedding
Every week, nearly 400 children and young people come to Safe‑Hub to play football, learn, and connect — and the Captains Committee gives some of them the chance to take on a bigger role. Through leadership workshops and hands‑on experience, children as young as five begin to practice communication, problem‑solving, and decision‑making in a safe, familiar environment. By rooting leadership development in football, the project helps them build confidence, feel a stronger sense of belonging, and develop the skills to take an active role in their community.
Playing for Purpose aims to strengthen underserved young people by removing barriers to being and staying physically active in Europe and North America. The Captains Committee does exactly that within Berlin‑Wedding: it builds on Safe‑Hub’s free, local football and education programs to ensure that children and young people have access sport, and stay engaged by taking on leadership roles, shaping activities, and feeling ownership over their environment.
