Introduction
Helping young people learn about the Holocaust and fight anti-Semitism through football.

Community details
ZWEITZEUGEN is a German organization educating young people on the Holocaust and present-day anti-Semitism and discrimination. The organization’s name stems from the German words “Zeitzeugen,” which translates to “eye witnesses” and “zweit,” the German word for “second.” ZWEITZEUGEN believes that through hearing stories from the Holocaust, young people will become second witnesses and empowered to stand up to anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination. The organization focuses on young people 10 and older, particularly those who have had limited exposure to stories from the Holocaust and anti-Semitism education.
About the organization
ZWEITZEUGEN uses one of Germany’s favorite pastimes to teach about one of the country’s darkest times. It uses its country’s most popular sport to reach young people and make it easier to open doors to discuss and learn about challenging and complex topics. ZWEITZEUGEN interviewed 38 Holocaust survivors and documented their lives and stories to share with young people in a variety of ways. At football learning centers, participants engage with survivors’ stories through educational projects, exhibitions, events, and publications. Through hearing personal accounts, ZWEITZEUGEN believes young people can change society by recognizing patterns of discrimination and becoming emboldened to stand up for human rights.

United by Sport
By sharing stories of Holocaust survivors in football settings, ZWEITZEUGEN reaches young people across Germany. The organization enables the next generation to learn from history, empowering participants to tackle discrimination and create an equitable and inclusive future.
